bark!

awoken!
   by the opening blow
of a shut thing—
    the latch!
of a short-sighted dog
              bark!
he says
     it is night!

the white moon rolls
    ballpoint on black sky
a word too long to be read by any less
    than the great conjoined eye
of our generation (lost mulling
     over lawns—
             bark!
     the near-blind dog hinges
back!
     he says
back to that
     made up childhood
back!
     to the spelling books
wide barn doors and hay
     when we all
took after the lean trees
     not a death in you
or me
