If you’re writing an essay about any gothy thing, or about the best shows about DEATH, or the top 25 time travel books of all time, or how the death of X person influenced Y piece of art/music/novel/etc. — this is what we want to see!
If you’re writing about processing the trauma of death, or writing about how your culture/religion/etc. deals with death — this is also what we want to see.
It is probably worth visiting the novella guidelines page to see the kind of subjects we are looking for with novella submissions–those are exactly the kind of media/culture/art/etc. we’d love to see you writing about.
We are especially interested in receiving nonfiction essays by BIPOC.
Submission Details:
We are looking to acquire original, unpublished essays. If your essay has been published in any way (like on your blog or your Patreon) that has been read by humans before, please do not submit!
We are looking for essays in the range of 1,000 – 2,000 words, but this is very flexible.
We DO NOT accept simultaneous submissions. If what you’re about to send us is or will be sent to other publishers at the same time, please do not send. We have a very fast turn around time, you will not have to wait a long time to hear from us
Payment:
We are paying a flat-fee of $50 for nonfiction essays.
Rights:
We are buying the right to send your essay to our email subscribers, and to post it on our website Psychopomp.com.
How to Submit:
Use this form to pitch your piece. No limit on how long or short your pitch should be–whatever is needed to communicate the idea and sell me on it.
If you already have a finished piece you want to submit instead of a pitch, you can submit that right here!
Check out the next section after this form for some inspiration/ideas.
The “Pitch Me!” Form
PLEASE NOTE: we’re getting a lot of pitches that are in the category of “creative nonfiction” — exploring something that happened in your life/the life of someone you know or knew told as if it’s a story–this is not what we’re looking for, and it’s going to be an extremely hard sell to the point where you probably shouldn’t try.
we’re so much more interested in exploring and seeing pieces about books, music, culture, fashion, movies, TV series (especially–all of them, modern media vs. reviewing a book that came out in the 70s or something).
Hope that helps!
Looking for some inspiration?
We have published SO MANY GREAT THINGS on this site. Check out and scroll through our blog to see some examples.
Want some other ideas? Okay! How about these:
Something something about funeral fashion?
Send us music reviews of albums that deeply explore a loss (like Dayseeker’s album Darksun)–we are especially interested in darker, heavy music with mostly clean vocals.
A new movie or novel that explores the multiverse or the underworld or related themes? Send it!
Other similar things… go!
