Novella Announcement: One Message Remains, By Premee Mohamed

Written By Sean Markey

Sean lives in an old farmhouse in northern Vermont, and is pretty sure the house isn’t very haunted… He works as a marketer during the day and is also the publisher of The Deadlands, a little magazine about beginnings and endings you may or may not have heard of.

Nebula, Aurora, and World Fantasy award-winning author Premee Mohamed’s One Message Remains, a novella about one man’s mission to recover the remains and souls of enemy soldiers after the latest round of a seemingly neverending war, to E. Catherine Tobler at Psychopomp by Michael Curry at Donald Maass Literary Agency.

The novella will be published as the centerpiece of a mini-collection set in the world of Premee’s story “The General’s Turn” originally published in The Deadlands, which will be reprinted in the collection, along with two additional short stories.

From The Author:

This novella actually began in a chat with my friend Jen Donohue, in which we were talking about ‘literary influences’ and how the voices of authors have the ability to seep into our current writing, an ambiguous case of necromancy—the dead acting upon the living. And I came up with the idea of reading the journals or letters of dead men, and finding their phrasing, vocabulary, or even entire sentences creeping into your own writing. I thought it might make an interesting little short story—but as I became more invested in Tzajos’ story, in him as a person, rather than a clear story of villains and heroes, I decided to write it as a novella instead. One Message Remains delves, I hope, into structures of power and duty, obedience and rebellion, culture clash and the painful, difficult construction of personal identity.

From Acquiring Editor E. Catherine Tobler

While I am intensely disappointed that this novella does not chronicle one man’s struggle against an evil that haunts and hunts him across fathomless seas, I did indeed find a haunted man in these pages, and grew to care for his story very much. Premee and I joked that the short story “The General’s Turn” was all vibes and no plot, but that’s never really true. I suppose one could say the same of One Message Remains, but when you reach the very end, you will look back in wonder the way I did.
